Improving the Nutrition Knowledge of KB/TK Teachers through Lecturer Service Activities

Malang, October 13, 2023. One of the obligations of lecturers in the Tridharma of Higher Education is to carry out community service activities. The Department of Nutrition of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIKES), Universitas Brawijaya, through Lecturer Mengabdi, carried out the activity “Implementation of Balanced Nutrition Guidelines for the Prevention of Nutrition Problems in PAUD / TK Children in the KB / TK Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal 23 Malang.” The lecturer team involved were Ayuningtyas Dian Ariestiningsih, S.Gz., M.P., Prof. Dian Handayani, S.KM., M. Kes., Ph.D, and Hayu Iyaka Nastaina, S.Gz, MPH. The purpose of this activity is to determine the nutritional status of students and increase teacher knowledge related to the implementation of balanced nutrition guidelines for preschool children.

Nutrition education activities were carried out on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 with 11 participants from KB / TK Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal 23 Malang. The nutrition education material presented about Balanced Nutrition in Preschool Age Children starting from the characteristics, growth and development of preschool age children, the practice of applying balanced nutrition to the daily menu. In this activity, information was also presented regarding the nutritional problem of obesity in preschool children. Education participants were very enthusiastic about participating in the activity. This can be seen from the number of participants who asked questions related to the material presented and experiences that occurred at school.

At the beginning and at the end of the activity, participants were asked to fill out a pre and posttest. The mean pretest score was 58.57, while the posttest score was 94.00. There was an increase in the knowledge of KB/TK teachers regarding the implementation of balanced nutrition guidelines for preschool children. The Principal of KB/TK Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal 23 Malang, Mrs. Ismiati Halimah, S.Pd., S.Psi, at the end of the activity said that this community service activity was very useful for KB/TK teachers and hoped that there would be follow-up activities in the coming year involving participants from other KB/TKs.
